Bumbag - Cinder red plum blossoms

US$130.00

Mikan original creation.

This bag combines traditional Japanese textiles and new materials. It is handcrafted in my studio in Kyoto.

Features

Sturdy and lightweight, this bumbag keeps your belongings within easy reach when your hands are busy.

The front of the bag is made of obi material and is covered with a protective treatment to help the silk live longer. The back is made of a lightweight and resistant 3D mesh. The adjustable belt allows you to wear it around your waist/hips or across your chest.

It is roomy, and the soft back fabric allows the bag to adapt to your body shape when not too full. When you need to pack more, a small water bottle, a book,k etc. It expands to make more space.

Motif and fabric details

This motif is a free (and darker) interpretation of Ogata Korin’s masterpiece Red and White Plum Blossoms. To me, it almost looks like Tim Burton and Ogata Korin made a collaborative piece together. You can read more about this beautiful obi below.

The Obi

This motif offers a darker interpretation of Ogata Korin’s masterpiece Red and White Plum Blossoms. Two trees stand against a dark silver background, facing each other across a shimmering gold river. The colors appear inverted from the original work, where a radiant gold-leaf background contrasts with a river painted in dark lines.

Here, the background is woven using Japanese washi paper layered with ultra-thin metal foils, creating its distinctive iridescent silver sheen. This technique, called hikinuki, sometimes incorporates mother-of-pearl or gold leaf. Other luminous details on this obi, like the fine swirls in the water, are achieved by weaving metal threads and lamé directly into the silk, enhancing the design’s richness.

To me, this obi looks almost like Time Burton and Ogata Korin made a collaborative piece together.
